Dr. Mark Schug is the Vice President of Research for The Financial Literacy Group. In that role he conducts research on the latest trends and innovations in the field financial literacy and economics education. He applies this research on behalf of firm clients by using it to assess the effectiveness of financial and economic education programs and to develop curriculum and training materials for youth and adults, including teachers.

An Emeritus Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Professor Schug directed the UW-Milwaukee Center for Economic Education which pioneered several financial and economic literacy programs for youth, parents, and other adults in partnership with local, state and national organizations.

Professor Schug taught for over 36 years at the secondary and university levels. He served for three years as a Senior Fellow with the Council on Economic Education where he worked closely with several national groups in developing financial and economic education programs including Your Credit Counts Challenge, Financial Fitness for Life and Learning, Earning and Investing. He has written over a dozen curriculum publications for the Council on Economic Education.

An award-winning classroom teacher, Professor Schug speaks to local, state, and national groups throughout the United States and in other countries. He has taught numerous financial and economic education courses at UW-Milwaukee and the National Institute for Financial Literacy. He has done financial and economics training programs in over 20 states. He has spoken to groups in Canada, England, Germany, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, and South Korea.

A respected scholar, he has written and edited over 200 publications including over 110 articles in academic journals. His articles have appeared in several national journals including Business Education Forum, Journal of Economic Education, Journal of Economics and Finance Education, Journal of Private Enterprise and Social Education. He is co-author of two high school economics textbooks published by McDougal Littell/Houghton Mifflin and co-author of Houghton Mifflin Social Studies. He has been quoted numerous times in local, state, and national news media including the Chicago Tribune, Investor’s Business Daily, Minneapolis Star and Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Money Magazine, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and the Wall Street Journal. Recent Op Eds have appeared in the Bakersfield Californian, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Orlando Sentinel, The Record (Hackensack NJ) and the Wisconsin State Journal.

His latest books are Teaching Economics in Troubled Times (2011) co-edited with William C. Wood and published by Routledge Press and Economic Episodes in American History (2011) co-authored with William C. Wood and published by Wohl Publishing.

Professor Schug also taught for ten years in two public school districts in Minnesota before accepting a professorship at UW-Milwaukee. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
