Lisa Bender is a widely recognized expert in teaching personal finance and has served as the Director of Youth Programs at The Financial Literacy Group for over five years. In that role she draws upon her passion for and experience in financial literacy to help our clients reach young people and the educators who teach them.
A National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), Mrs. Bender is a 30-year veteran of Maryland Public Schools, where she was a pioneer in bringing financial literacy education into her school, her school district and her state. As a teacher, she accumulated a number of honors including the National Leavy Award for Excellence in Free Enterprise Education, the Unsung Hero of the Classroom Award and a finalist for Maryland State Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Mrs. Bender has been awarded numerous grants to support her work in spreading financial literacy.
After her teaching career, Mrs. Bender advanced the cause of youth financial education by assisting in the development and growth of impactful, national programs such as the University of Arizona’s Take Charge Today program and the Wharton School’s Global Youth Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
During her years with The Financial Literacy Group, she has made important contributions on a number of engagements including the firm’s work for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in developing a financial education digital platform for teachers. FLG developed over 200 classroom financial literacy activities for K-12 teachers and Mrs. Bender was central to that effort.
Mrs. Bender earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from Frostburg State University and a Master’s in Education from the University of Maryland.
